DEPDC (Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communities)

The Daughters' Education Programme(DEP) in Chiang Rai province headed by social activist Sompop Chantraka, provides free educational training and shelter for girls (mainly from the hilltribes) to save them from the sex trafficking.

Dhammajarinee Witthaya - a Nunnery school for girls

In Thai Buddhism, only boys get educational support from the temples as novices. A group of nuns in LamPhun and Ratchaburi provinces wants to give the same opportunities to poor rural girls by offering them free education and boarding. Apart from text book learning, the curriculum stresses strict spiritual training.

Amazing Thailand - a fascinating country, known all around the world as the land of smiles, the land of beautiful tropical beaches, the fine arts and performances ... this is the picture painted by the tourist industry. And it's true, tourists will find all this when travelling to the kingdom.

But unfortunately this is not all the truth. There is also the dark side, Thailand as a destination of sex-tourists, the exploitation of thai girls and boys in the ever growing sex-industry, the extreme poverty in the rural and hilltribe areas, the growing aids epedemy that is destroying families and is leaving children as aids orphans.

The recent economic crisis, together with the negative effects of globalization has hit thailands poor population hard and has increased the already existing social problems.

Recently, there has been a lot of campaigning mainly driven by NGO (non-government organizations). These campaigns can be very helpful by creating awareness of social issues in thailand and by raising funds for relief projects. But some of these campaigns went too far, even demanding the boycott of thai products. We think that this would be not helpful at all and would even add to the problems. Painting the picture just in black and white will not help much in understanding the complex social problems of a developing country.

Such an attitude also ignores the many initiatives and projects, organized by the Thai Royal Family, by thai NGOs and government institutions and individuals. It also ignores the changing attidude of the thai government and thai officials towards the issues of sex-tourism and child exploitation.

These topics are not anymore ignored and covered with silence and there is a growing awareness and a broad discussion about these issues also inside Thailand.

With the start of the new section 'We Care' , thailife.de will present projects within thailand that are working for improving the situation of the poor population, especially for the children. Of course we can not present all of the many projects on our pages, but we will include links to other webpages containing additional information.

We will focuss on projects that are providing education and training to children and save the children from being drawn into the sex industry.

Most of the material we publish on the thailife.de website we have gathered when we visited these projects and had the chance to talk with the people who work there and dedicate their time and effort to helping others. We have seen that they are working successfully and we are sure they deserve your supports and donations.
